Science
Several butterfly crysallises.
Our insects are continuing to grow and change.  Above, we have four caterpillers that have made crysallises.  Below are some of our mealworm pupas.
Two mealworm pupa. They twitch to keep preditors away.
The crickets continue to chirp.  All of the waxworms are now pupas.  They are in warm containers in the dark.  Our milkweed eggs have hatched and the tiny milkweed bugs are just starting to be large enough to view.  The students are very interested in the changes in our insects.
Reading
Read-to-Self is going well.  Most students are easily spending 15 minutes with good books.  I have been listening to children read and will start specific reading instruction with the youngest readers this week.  Work-on-Writing has been very productive.  Students have been working independently for about 10 minutes a day in their composition books.  We are learning how to be reading coaches during Read-to-Someone.  If our partner needs help we ask "Do you need coaching or more time?"  If they ask for coaching we ask "Do you want me to tell you the word or help you sound it out?"  Sometimes we suggest that the reader looks at the picture for a clue.
Zachary and Jazzy practice Reading-to-Someone.

Writing
We have a Writer's Workshop time later in the morning for 'making books'.  We are looking at books that follow a pattern.  As we study these books we can think of ways to make our own pattern books. Libby Correll, a Literacy Specialist will be visited our class again on Monday, Oct 8th.  She is working with teachers and students in the implimentation of our writing curriculum.

Homework
Homework will be given to students on Tuesday.  Let me know how it is going.  Is it confusing?  Is it just right?  What are your suggestions?

Halloween
We usually have a costume parade at school on the afternoon of Halloween.  This year Halloween is on an early release day.  I will send you more information about the parade when I have it.  Children do not wear their costumes to school on Halloween.  They bring their costumes in their backpacks and are given time to change before the parade.  Costumes need to be appropriate for school and not scary to preschool or kindergarteners who will be viewing the parade.  We actually parade through each classroom.  Halloween is definitely on our minds.
